Before people have been taught the skills associated with public speaking, most find it very intimidating. You certainly are not the only one. Many people don't want to speak in front of a group. When you practice your speech, be sure to time it. You'll be able to add or subtract content to keep it in your time limit. If it is not long enough, add a bit of meat to it. It is important not to rush through your speech.
Being prepared is key to making good public speaking impressions. Know what you want to say. Support as many of your statements as you can with research. Write down what you want to say. Practice until you know the speech by heart. Solid preparation gives you confidence for the speech itself.
Know the audience that you are speaking to. If you can, it would be good if you could find out who will be attending. If possible, greet a couple of them and find out what their names are. Your speech will be much more relaxed if you feel friendly with the audience.
If you have skipped some of the information in your speech, continue talking rather than getting yourself and the audience confused by an awkward flow of words. If you stop and backtrack and try to correct your error, you will end up with a big mess. Also, people probably won't even notice that you omitted something.
Learning how to breathe properly can help you relax before speaking in public. Prior to getting up on stage, engage in some deep breathing. Try inhaling through the nose and exhaling through the mouth while counting to five. Do this about 6 times to calm yourself down.
Dress nicely, even if you are going to be at an event that is casual. If you feel that you look good, your speaking will reflect that. Men should wear ties if possible, as ties help to direct eyes towards your face as you speak.
Never take a drink of alcohol prior to making a public speech. Although it may seem like a good idea to help bolster your confidence, it is a bad idea. You don't want to start speaking and suddenly forget your lines or say them in a way that others don't understand thanks to the alcohol.
To speak well, you must have a thorough understanding of the topic at hand. Make sure that your topic is as exciting as possible, and also something that you are deeply interested in. Keep a conversational tone to keep the attention of your audience.
